2.2 12-24 month IT Strategy

In this step of my IT strategy, I want to ensure that I setup a process that conducts business analysis at least on an annual basis to establish that our systems are still working in tandem with the business vision and allow adjustments using business process improvement (BPI).

Always invest in people and set aside an adequate annual training budget. Allow for adequate research materials to be made available for staff in order that they can stay abreast of technologies (CIO Executive Council, TIF, Gartner etc) and communicate their membership to the entire IT department. Encourage staff to participate in their online and in person meeting forums as this will not only strengthen the department but will also create confidence. Ask the staff to set aside at least 10% od their time towards an activity that they feel will better the company or themselves. Organisations that have allowed this have reaped significant rewards, eg: Post it notes were developed as a result of 3M allowing this to happen.
Last but not least create an environment of open communication, i.e. the entire department should have an overview at a high level of what activities they are are undertaking and how that will contribute to the end goal.
